Direct Sale
Wendy Wong
Is life really that busy that you have
to be stuck at your desk ........?

Ring-a-ding, ring-a-ding?.(telephone ringing)

(Male voice):  "Hello Mrs. Wong?  This is Mark Johnson.  I am calling you regarding the Direct Sales catalog which you will receive in the mail soon.  Do you know where Highway 400 and Steeles is?"

(Me): "Yeh, somewhat."

(Male voice):"Good.  In the catalog we will be sending you, you will find our location, we have over 500 different categories of items which you can buy direct from the manufacturers without going through the little men in between and you will be amazed at how much money you can save if you shop direct with us.  Now, since our store is not open to the public, we'll be happy to send you a personal pass which you can use to gain access to our store.  Would you be interested in getting this pass?"
What will it cost me to get this pass?

(Me):"No, thank you.  I am not interested."

(Male voice): "Ok, maybe we can help you sometime in the future."

Maybe, or maybe not!  At this time of slow economic growth in Toronto, Canada, Asia, or worldwide, I believe in retail.
I believe in the "little guys in between" trying to make a decent living selling and delivering products from manufacturers to consumers by doing retail.

I believe in the convenience consumers enjoy by getting what they need at nearby retail stores in the amount that they need instead of hulling in unnecessary "stock up-save more" bulk goods.
I believe in the friendly sales persons when I shop at retail stores.

I believe in the convenient and fair exchange or refund options that retail stores provide for their customers.

More and more retail stores are being hit hard by direct manufacturer outlets, big box sales, web shopping, TV shopping and any other imaginable ways of direct sales.
More and more people are being forced out of the retail sales business and end up doing telemarketing at home trying to make a few bucks.  Who brought this on to them? Are the rich getting richer and the poor poorer?

Pardon me, I'm old school. I cannot see what is wrong with spending time with one's  family and friends and doing some leisurely shopping, sharing opinion in deciding on an item and having a cup of tea or coffee after.
Is life really that busy that you have to be stuck at your desk going through catalogs, searching web pages or calling a number on the TV screen?
